Ellie – the Valentines Day aftermath….

As you will have seen from the photo’s in my last blog post, I was sent a beautiful bouquet of long stemmed red roses for Valentines Day (yes, it was a while ago now…!). Ellie was VERY interested in my roses when I took them home (they were delivered to me at work), so much so that I knew they were never going to survive in a vase on the coffee table. The only place they would be safe from Ellie’s exploring was on top of the chest of drawers in the main bedroom, and to make sure the bedroom door was safely secured each day.

This all went well for the the first few days, Ellie was banned from the bedroom, even when she sat outside meowing pathetically (I’m sure sometimes she thinks we’ve forgotten she’s there – no chance!). Then, it happened…..I went off to work and my partner inadvertently left the bedroom door open….(luckily my roses had by then seen better days and were starting to look worse for wear)…..I think the photo’s tell the story of what happened next…..

Ellie and the furniture!

Ellie the scavenger in the kitchen sink!

From day one we have tried to keep Ellie off the furniture and teach her good habits…..it seems we are failing miserably! At first she was too small to jump directly onto the kitchen bench anyway, but before long she worked out a way to climb up onto a wicker chair, across the top of a folded up clothes airier and straight onto the bench! More than once we caught her in the kitchen sink licking butter off a knife or scavenging some other left over’s not yet cleaned up. So out came the water squirt bottle….but all too soon she didn’t mind it that much, and during some of the hot days we’ve had lately she actually seemed to like it! Now nothing seems to be off limits for Ellie – the coffee table, the computer desk, our bedside tables, the TV unit – maybe it’s just her exploring instincts that leads her astray….but I think we have our work cut out for us!

Ellie the copy cat!

Ellie being a copy cat and sleeping on the bed with Daisy!

Ellie continues to get bigger on what seems to be a daily basis, she has a very healthy appetite and there is never anything left in her bowl at feeding time! She is big enough now that she doesn’t really look like a kitten anymore more, and she is well on her way to being a “grown up cat”! Lately she seems to copy everything that Daisy does, it’s quite funny to watch in the mornings when they are both let out of the laundry (where they sleep at night – in separate beds), Daisy heads straight over to the scratching post, and Ellie watches and then does exactly the same thing!

Whatever Daisy is doing, Ellie wants to do to….since they have “moved in together” into the laundry to sleep, I have been giving Daisy some “time out” during the day and letting her sleep on our bed, usually a big no no. It was ok for the first week or two, Ellie would find a place downstairs and sleep there for a couple of hours. But as soon as she discovered where Daisy was spending her days, she wanted to do the same thing! She followed Daisy around like a shadow, as if to say “I want to be just like you, and sleep on the big bed!”…..poor Daisy, it doesn’t seem like she is ever going to get any peace and quiet!
